Beyond the Lens: Frankenmuth v Portland (Regional Semi-Finals)
At Owosso High School, Frankenmuth battled Portland in the second game of the evening to determine which squad would advance to the regional finals versus Freeland. The Eagles jumped out to an early lead, but momentum swings throughout the evening were the theme of the contest. In an unorthodox move, Frankenmuth’s Coach Keller began the game with freshman phenom Lexi Boyke handling the primary ball handling role which seemed to through off Portland in the first quarter propelling the Eagles to an 18-10 lead after one.
Portland would recover though in the second and ride a wave of momentum, and some questionable calls, to pull within three at the half 27-24. The second half brought more of the same, with momentum swings and scoring runs from both sides seeing the lead of Frankenmuth shrink to a single point (35-34) heading into the final quarter.
Both teams gave their all through the match up, and frustration by both sides was evident during the game, as three pointers were hit (and matched) at both ends of the court in a back-and-forth heavy weight fight. In the final minutes, some key plays by Frankemuth on the offensive end of the floor, and lock-down defensive possessions by senior Sydney Merrihew propelled the Eagles to a great 52-43 win over a tough-as-nails Portland team.
The Eagles will move on to face TVC East nemesis Freeland in Thursday evenings Regional Final…should be a great one!
