The last remaining undefeated volleyball teams in the TVC West faced off this evening at Nouvel Catholic Central High School, as the Panthers played host to the visiting Valley Lutheran Chargers in a packed, rowdy gymnasium! The winners would walk off the court with a guaranteed piece of the regular season TVC West championship, and some great momentum heading into district play in a few short weeks. As the players took to the court on Senior Night, the entire gym rapidly filled up with supporters from both schools, providing an energy-filled, championship atmosphere.
In game one, both teams came out of the gates with intensity and focus, battling at the net, and chasing loose balls across the gym. Back-and-forth rallies by both squads made every point feel like a game winner as the teams hustled around the court. In a tough fought game, the visitors were able to take the win with a late run of points 25-19.
Game two saw more hustle and some great competitiveness from each team. The student sections on each side were cheering for each point, and were paid back with maximum effort from all the players on the floor. Although the score remained very close throughout the game, Nouvel was able to gain a little separation in the final few points and tie up the match by taking game two 25-23.
Valley Lutheran regrouped in the third game, and came out of the break with a hot streak. High levels of skill were displayed on both sides as every attack on net was challenged, and back row defenders were keeping volleys alive with some amazing defense. The Chargers were able to put together a nice run midway through the game, and took the win rather comfortably by a score of 25-13.
With a 2-1 lead heading into game four, the Chargers kept their foot on the gas and stayed on the attack offensively. Nouvel was able to counter with some great volleys and more than a few spectacular digs pulled off by players diving all around the court. The student sections and fans from each school kept the gym rocking all the way until the final point was scored, and in a great match between two very good teams, Valley Lutheran closed out the match with a 25-23 victory.
With the win, the Chargers move to 8-0 in conference play heading into the final conference matches next week and Nouvel falls to 7-1 on the season. Each of the squads battled hard, left it all on the court, and were cheered on by their respective fan bases in a great show of athletic competition. A packed house and championship atmosphere were exactly what was expected from this match up of undefeated teams, and both teams put on great performances they will be able to build on heading into tournament play in the upcoming weeks.
